On every AntMaster species page you'll see a difficulty level: Beginner, Requires attention or Experts only. This page explains what each one means, so you can choose a species that matches your real experience with ants. If this is your first colony, the simplest option is to start with a nest from our nest collection and a "Beginner" level species, such as Messor barbarus.

Beginner
Species that are easy to manage: undemanding diet, calm behavior, and humidity and temperature needs that are easy to maintain in an ordinary home. In practice, that usually means normal room temperature (approx. 20-27°C) and moderate humidity in just one area of the nest, with no mandatory hibernation. These are the recommended choice if this is your first colony. Real example from our catalog: Messor barbarus.
Requires attention
Species that need more careful management: a more delicate founding stage, mandatory hibernation that must be well managed, or greater sensitivity to stress and handling. For example, in Camponotus cruentatus hibernation usually lasts around 3-4 months (roughly November to February) at low temperatures, around 8-12°C. Recommended if you've already kept a simple colony before without problems. Real example from our catalog: Camponotus cruentatus.
Experts only
Species with specific requirements and little room for error: strict humidity or temperature parameters, aggressive behavior, or care that only makes sense if you already know myrmecology well. Here the margin for error is minimal: a few points of humidity or 2-3°C too much or too little can seriously affect the colony. These are not the recommended starting point.

Frequently asked questions
Which species is best for beginners?
If this is your first colony, Messor barbarus is a good option: easy management, no mandatory hibernation, and humidity and temperature that are easy to maintain at home. You'll find it in our nest collection.
How long does hibernation last in species that require attention?
In species like Camponotus cruentatus, it usually lasts between 3 and 4 months, roughly from November to February, at low temperatures (8-12°C). It's a mandatory process, not optional.
Can I skip the intermediate level?
We don't recommend it. Going straight from a "Beginner" species to an "Experts only" one greatly increases the risk of losing the colony due to management mistakes. It's better to move up a level gradually.
Where can I find food and accessories for each level?
In our feeding and accessories collections you'll find what you need for any level, from basic feeders to equipment for managing hibernation.
