Messor capitatus: care sheet

Quick answer. Messor capitatus is a Mediterranean harvester ant with glossy black workers and majors with very prominent heads, cared for just like Messor barbarus: a seed diet, a rather dry environment with a humid area for the brood and a temperature of 20 to 28 degrees in the active season. It takes a winter rest, although less marked than northern European species. It's as rewarding as barbarus and visually different, so it's a good second colony for anyone who already knows how to care for harvester ants and wants some variety without changing their routine.

At a glance

Origin Mediterranean basin
Diet Seeds, with the occasional insect
Temperature 20-28 °C in the active season
Humidity Low, with a humid area for the brood
Diapause Yes, mild
Difficulty Easy

What the species is like

Like the other Messor, it organises its life around grain: it collects it, stores it in dry chambers, grinds it and carries the waste out to the foraging area. The majors, with big heads and powerful mandibles, handle the hardest seeds.

The typical mistake is too much humidity in the storage area: the grain sprouts, mould appears and the colony suffers.

What the colony needs

A nest with a large dry area and a humid spot, plus a foraging area to leave waste in. The Dry models and the standard ones in the Terra range both work, depending on the humidity in your home. For grain, small mixes such as chia.

In the look of the workers and a somewhat different growth rate. Care is practically the same.

Does it need insects?

It doesn't need them, but they speed up brood development if you give them every now and then.
