Maintenance and cleaning guide for your AntMaster ant nest
Last updated: September 5, 2026
To keep your AntMaster ant nest clean, wash the modules with lukewarm water and a soft-bristle brush, and clean the humidity system's sponge with hot tap water, without detergents or chemical products. If the humidity system fails or loses its retaining thread, you can replace it with the replacement thread for the humidity system from our AntMaster accessories collection. This will keep the humidity system in good condition for your colony.
In this guide we explain how to clean the modules, properly maintain the humidity system, and what to do if dirt or mold appears.
Before you start
Before doing any maintenance task, make sure the ants are in a safe area and that you can work on the module without any risk of them escaping.
We recommend using clean gloves when handling the sponges and other humidity system parts to avoid introducing dirt or contaminants.
Important: do not use cleaning products, detergents, bleach, alcohol or other chemical products on the modules or the humidity system.
Cleaning the modules
The ant nest's modules have an interior surface of plaster and sand designed to provide a suitable environment for the colony.
To preserve this surface, it's important to clean it carefully.
Step 1: Remove the module
Before cleaning it, separate the module from the rest of the ant nest and make sure no ants are left inside it.
If the module is connected to others, use the gates and locks to isolate it before taking it apart.
Step 2: Clean with lukewarm water
Use only lukewarm water to clean the inside of the module.
You can use a brush with very soft bristles to remove dirt or food residue.
Use gentle movements without applying too much pressure.
Do not use hard brushes, scouring pads or abrasive tools. The interior surface contains sand that could come loose if scrubbed too hard.
Step 3: Rinse and let dry
Once the dirt is removed, rinse the module carefully with lukewarm water.
Let it dry completely before reconnecting it to the ant nest.
Do not fit the module back in wet if it isn't part of the humidity system.
Cleaning the humidity system
The humidity system uses a sponge to distribute and maintain humidity inside the ant nest.
With use, the sponge can accumulate particles, residue or dirt, so it's a good idea to check it periodically.
Step 1: Remove the humidity system
Remove the humidity system from the ant nest following the procedure described in our Usage Guide and First Steps for Your AntMaster Ant Nest.
Handle it carefully and avoid pulling hard.
Step 2: Remove the sponge
Once the system is out, carefully remove the sponge so you can clean it.
We recommend using clean gloves during this process.
Step 3: Cleaning the sponge
Place the sponge in a clean container and add hot tap water.
Gently squeeze the sponge several times in the water to help remove dirt trapped in its pores.
Repeat the process until the water runs clean.
Do not use detergents or chemical products.
Step 4: Put the sponge back
Once clean, wring out the sponge and put it back into the humidity system.
If the sponge is completely dry, you can moisten it slightly with water before fitting it.
Put the humidity system back into the ant nest.
It should go in easily and without needing force. The magnets will keep it correctly pressed against the sponge.
Cleaning the lid and the acrylic
To clean the acrylic surfaces, use a soft, clean cloth.
If needed, you can lightly dampen the cloth with water.
Avoid:
-
Scouring pads.
-
Paper that could scratch the surface.
-
Abrasive products.
-
Solvents.
-
Alcohol.
-
Harsh cleaning products.
Always use gentle movements to avoid scratching the acrylic.
Gate maintenance
Check periodically that the gates slide correctly.
If you notice resistance, check for sand, food residue or other debris in the mechanism.
Do not force a stuck gate.
First remove any dirt that may be hindering its movement.
Connection maintenance
When the ant nest is made up of several modules, periodically check that the connections remain properly joined.
After any cleaning, disassembly or modification:
-
Check that the modules are correctly aligned.
-
Verify that the connections are secure.
-
Check that the gates work correctly.
-
Make sure there are no visible gaps.
-
Check that the ants can't reach any outside area through a poorly fitted connection.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if mold appears?
If you notice mold on the sponge or anywhere in the humidity system, remove the system and do a thorough cleaning with hot water, making sure to remove all visible dirt. Let the sponge dry completely before putting it back. If the mold persists, comes back quickly, or the sponge is significantly deteriorated, we recommend replacing it with a new one. Do not put a sponge with visible mold into the ant nest.
How often should I clean the ant nest?
There's no single frequency: it depends on the colony's size, the amount of food provided and how much waste builds up. We recommend doing small cleanings when needed, rather than constantly taking the whole ant nest apart, paying attention to food residue, dead insects, the sponge's condition and how well the gates work.
Can I use soap, bleach or alcohol to clean the ant nest?
No. Do not use detergents, bleach, alcohol or other chemical products on the modules, the sponge or the acrylic. Always use lukewarm or hot water and, if needed, a brush with very soft bristles.
What do I do if a gate gets stuck?
Check for sand, food residue or other debris in the mechanism and remove it carefully. Never force a stuck gate: first remove whatever dirt is hindering its movement.
